This is level 2: use the triangle area formula to solve related problems. You can earn a trophy if you get at least 7 questions correct.

Warning Triangle
A red triangle with a base of 5.6cm and a height of 4.8cm has a trangular shaped hole cut out. The base and height of the triangular hole are half the base and height of the original red triangle respectively. What is the remaining area of the red triangle (to two decimal places)?
cm2 Correct Wrong
The area of a triangle with base of length 4cm is 16cm2. Calculate its height in centimetres. cm Correct Wrong
A right angled triangle has sides of length 3cm, 4cm and 5cm. Calculate its area in square centimetres. cm2 Correct Wrong
Similar Triangles
The area of the large triangle is four times the small triangle. Calculate the height of the small triangle.
cm Correct Wrong
The area of a triangle is 147cm2. The height of the triangle is 7cm longer than the base. How long is the base? cm Correct Wrong
Sailing dinghy
Transum Sails Ltd make triangular shaped sails that have bases 5.2m and heights 3.4m. They currently have in stock 270.6 square metres of the material used to make the sails. Assuming there is no waste, how many complete sails can they make?
Correct Wrong
The area of a one triangle is 20cm2 more than the area of a second triangle. Both triangle are of the same height. If the base of the first triangle is 12cm and the base of the second triangle is 10cm find the height of the triangles. cm Correct Wrong
Kite
Percy makes a kite from a rectangular piece of material (56cm by 102cm) by cutting a triangle from each corner of the rectangle. The kite's dimensions are shown in the diagram. What is the total area of the four triangles cut off as waste?
cm2 Correct Wrong
A triangle has an area of one square metre. The length of its base is 250cm. Find the height of the triangle giving your answer in milimetres! mm Correct Wrong
Octagon
Find the length of one side of a regular octagon if its area is 309cm2 and the distance between parallel sides is 19.3cm. Give your answer correct to the nearest whole number.

Instructions

Try your best to answer the questions above. Type your answers into the boxes provided leaving no spaces. As you work through the exercise regularly click the "check" button. If you have any wrong answers, do your best to do corrections but if there is anything you don't understand, please ask your teacher for help.

When you have got all of the questions correct you may want to print out this page and paste it into your exercise book. If you keep your work in an ePortfolio you could take a screen shot of your answers and paste that into your Maths file.

Why am I learning this?

Mathematicians are not the people who find Maths easy; they are the people who enjoy how mystifying, puzzling and hard it is. Are you a mathematician?

Comment recorded on the 24 May 'Starter of the Day' page by Ruth Seward, Hagley Park Sports College:

"Find the starters wonderful; students enjoy them and often want to use the idea generated by the starter in other parts of the lesson. Keep up the good work"

Comment recorded on the 17 June 'Starter of the Day' page by Mr Hall, Light Hall School, Solihull:

"Dear Transum,

I love you website I use it every maths lesson I have with every year group! I don't know were I would turn to with out you!"

Each month a newsletter is published containing details of the new additions to the Transum website and a new puzzle of the month.

The newsletter is then duplicated as a podcast which is available on the major delivery networks. You can listen to the podcast while you are commuting, exercising or relaxing.

Transum breaking news is available on Twitter @Transum and if that's not enough there is also a Transum Facebook page.

Learning and understanding Mathematics, at every level, requires learner engagement. Mathematics is not a spectator sport. Sometimes traditional teaching fails to actively involve students. One way to address the problem is through the use of interactive activities and this web site provides many of those. The Go Maths page is an alphabetical list of free activities designed for students in Secondary/High school.
