Zoe adopts some animals at the local zoo. The monthly cost of adopting a snake is £5. The cost of adopting a lizard is £6 and the cost of adopting a lamprey fish is £7. If her monthly adoption bill is £34 and she has adopted at least one of each type of animal.

Here are the times it takes to perform some transformations on a widget: Rotation: 13 seconds: Reflection: 16 seconds: Enlargement: 17 seconds: Translation: 19 seconds. Six operations (at least one of each type) were performed one after the other. The total time was 100 seconds.

Example

Pens cost 12p each, pencils cost 5p each. Matthew spent 63p altogether. How many of each did he buy?

One possible method for solving this problem is by constructing a table of possibilities.

In this case you could cut down the work required by noticing that the cost of pencils is an odd number while the cost of pens is an even number. In order to achieve an odd total the number of pencils must be odd:

So Matthew bought 4 pens and 3 pencils.
