Time Arithmetic

Practise adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing times with these self-marking exercises.

This is level 5: Mixed. You will be awarded a trophy if you get at least 9 correct and you do this activity online.

Use colons to separate hours and minutes (and seconds in some questions). The time of day can be given in the twenty-four hour format (17:05) or the twelve hour format (5:05pm).

Vanessa’s train leaves at 12:23pm. It takes her half an hour to travel to the station from her home. What is the latest time she should leave home in order to catch her train?

It takes Jasbir ten and a quarter hours to make five dream catchers. How long would it take him to make two dream catchers?

Sak’s flight departs at twenty to five in the afternoon. His flight time is an hour and three quarters. What time does he arrive?

Add the following two times given in hours, minutes and seconds. 2:45:50 and 3:27:48.

Find the difference between the following two times given in hours, minutes and seconds:
5:13:25 and 3:22:38.

Find the mean of these times given in hours, minutes and seconds. 1:55:50, 2:45:10 and 3:17:09.

Multiply 2:23:45 by 3.

Divide 12:38:41 by 7.

The running time of a new film is 2:23:30. How many seconds is that altogether?

Louise flies from Bangkok to London. The flight leaves Bangkok at 0645. The journey takes 12 hours 35 minutes. Bangkok time is 6 hours ahead of London time (BST). Find the time in London when she arrives.

Natasha flies from Bangkok to Auckland. The flight leaves Bangkok at 2245. The journey takes 11 hours 10 minutes. Auckland time is 5 hours ahead of Bangkok time. Find the time in Auckland when she arrives.

Aaron has to take some medication nine times each day. The timing of each dose should be equally spaced throughout the day. If he takes his first dose at midnight, whet time should he take his eighth dose?

Try your best to answer the questions above. Type your answers into the boxes provided leaving no spaces. As you work through the exercise regularly click the "check" button. If you have any wrong answers, do your best to do corrections but if there is anything you don't understand, please ask your teacher for help.

When you have got all of the questions correct you may want to print out this page and paste it into your exercise book. If you keep your work in an ePortfolio you could take a screen shot of your answers and paste that into your Maths file.
