Mathematicians are not the people who find Maths easy; they are the people who enjoy how mystifying, puzzling and hard it is. Are you a mathematician?

Comment recorded on the 18 September 'Starter of the Day' page by Mrs. Peacock, Downe House School and Kennet School:

"My year 8's absolutely loved the "Separated Twins" starter. I set it as an optional piece of work for my year 11's over a weekend and one girl came up with 3 independant solutions."

Comment recorded on the 11 January 'Starter of the Day' page by S Johnson, The King John School:

"We recently had an afternoon on accelerated learning. This linked really well and prompted a discussion about learning styles and short term memory."

Each month a newsletter is published containing details of the new additions to the Transum website and a new puzzle of the month.

The newsletter is then duplicated as a podcast which is available on the major delivery networks. You can listen to the podcast while you are commuting, exercising or relaxing.

Transum breaking news is available on Twitter @Transum and if that's not enough there is also a Transum Facebook page.

Go Maths

Learning and understanding Mathematics, at every level, requires learner engagement. Mathematics is not a spectator sport. Sometimes traditional teaching fails to actively involve students. One way to address the problem is through the use of interactive activities and this web site provides many of those. The Go Maths main page links to more activities designed for students in upper Secondary/High school.

"Work on the activity above with a friend or by yourself. Use your mouse to drag the numbers and the row and column headings to different positions. Is it possible to find a solution? If it is how many different solutions are there? If it is not can you prove it?"

"Hi, I am trying to figure out this puzzle... It was asking for a triangular number which is also a multiple of 4 but there are none. Is this an error?

[Transum: Well spotted. That is why there is a ‘Change Headings’ button for you to use. Good luck]

Ah OK. That seems like quite a bit of work to figure out which goes together though. All the other puzzles aren't like this. There was also an odd and even heading, which obviously can't be in the same game. This makes it quite hard.

I have played around with this game this evening and I've yet to find a combination of headings where you can use all the numbers 1-16. I think this puzzle needs looking at by you and resetting.

[Transum: When you say “There was also an odd and even heading, which obviously can't be in the same game” that’s not correct. If they are both column headings (or both row headings) there would be no conflict.Keep thinking. It certainly is possible.]

Yes, but as a busy teacher I like using your website for quick games. Having to sit and figure out if the game is even possible takes far too long. Your other game which is similar says ‘this random version may not be possible’. I think you need a disclaimer on this game too. Thanks. Hannah"

"Just noticed the 'change headings' button. I used it because I had one column that was 'odd number' and a row that was 'even number' so I'm glad change headings is a thing!"
