Two players each have 12 pieces which are placed on the board leaving the centre position free. Moves are allowed along any line to a vacant position. Pieces are captured by being jumped over - more than one capture being possible in a move.
The thoughtful smile on the face of the Sphinx in Egypt could well be the sign of contemplating the next move in a game of Alquerque. This game, played on the game board shown above, dates back over three thousand years and is very similar to draughts.
